I know there are a ton of sites out there that show how to do this. I have spent the past two weeks trying to put my iPod Touch 2G into a semi-tethered Jail Broken state by following RedSn0w’s directions and the many posts at iPod Touch Fans without any success. I finally came across a video that shows how to install the Winterboard patch on a jail broken ipt2g which also happens to include a zip file containing all files necessary to jail break your ipt2g – with these files already created I was able to Jail Break my ipt2g without having to install or do anything with pwnageTool.
I have recompressed the only files required to perform a simple semi-tethered jail break (NOTE: This is no longer available for download as there is an untethered JailBreak option now available.)
Please Note: The methods below were not created by me. I am simply sharing the method that worked best (and easiest) for me after 2 weeks of intense failures over and over again.
1. Download ipt2g_semijb_simplified.tar.gz and extract its contents to your desktop (or any other location).
2. Place your ipt2g in DFU mode (with your Touch connected to your Mac, hold the HOME & POWER buttons for 10 seconds, then release the POWER button while holding the HOME button for another 7 seconds).
3. From the ipt2g_semitethered_jailbreak_osx folder in Terminal start rslite.
4. Type !iBSS211.dfu to send the official iBSS from 2.1.1 and then press ENTER.
5. Start rslite again and type #pwn211ibss.txt and press ENTER to send the redsn0w-lite patch.
6. Start rslite again and type !iBSS221pwn.dfu and press ENTER to send the patched iBSS from 2.2.1.
NOTE: At this point your ipt2g should be in Recovery mode. I have found that the first time I did this it did not remain in Recovery mode. If it is not in Recovery mode then repeat steps 2 to 6 above.
7. Start iTunes and hold the ALT/OPTION key while pressing the RESTORE button. Navigate to the Semi-Tethered JailBreak.ipsw file and select it.
8. After the Recovery has completed, close iTunes and repeat steps 2 to 6 above.
9. Start rslite and type !iBoot221semi.img3 and press ENTER to send the patched iBoot from 2.2.1.
10. Start rslite and type the following to send the patched kernel for this boot:
setenv boot-path /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kernelcaches/kernelcache.s5l8720p
fsboot
11. After this you made need to wait a few minutes before you can access your Touch interface. Patience is key.
NOTE: if you cannot start rslite in step 10 above then you may need to do steps 2-6 and 9-10 over again. From my expereince, the first time doesn’t always work, but the second will every time.
12. Follow the instructions here to install the Winterboard patch.
